Mile Chase is a musical partnership that began in 1998 when Django
Amerson and Brian Miller began playing Irish music together in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Django (fiddle, bouzouki) and Brian (guitar, vocals, Irish flute, whistles)
are gifted young musicians who play real Irish traditional music with sensitivity
and sophistication. Their arrangements and selections are innovative in a way
that pays close attention to the integrity of the Irish tradition. 5 Mile Chase
has a diverse repertoire of new and old songs and dance tunes including many
recently composed tunes and some by Brian and Django themselves. Whatever the
origin, each tune is played with subtle improvisation and dynamic twists and
turns.
Both Django and Brian are well-traveled students of Irish music. Django was introduced to Irish fiddle playing at a young age while attending the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in his hometown of Port Townsend, Washington. Brian came to Irish music as a high schooler in Bemidji, Minnesota. There he started the popular Irish group The Gaels with whom he has performed for the past six years. Both Django and Brian studied Irish music for a semester in Cork, Ireland while enrolled at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Django spent the year 2000 and half of 2001 in the thriving Boston Irish music scene, honing his fiddle chops and playing with some of the top players in the world. He has also returned to Port Townsend to act as a fiddle tutor at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. Brian has performed throughout Minnesota and the surrounding area with the Gaels. He joined fiddler Chris Buckley at the 2001 Milwaukee Irish Fest and he often accompanies renowned flute player Laurence Nugent when he comes to Minneapolis. Both Django and Brian perform often with flautist/piper Laura MacKenzie as part of Laura and the Lads.
5 Mile Chase performs often at Kieran's Irish Pub in Minneapolis and at the Dubliner in St. Paul. Their self-titled debut CD was released February 1st, 2003. Amy Carlson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press writes, "5 Mile Chase has created a hauntingly gorgeous debut release that captures the spirited sadness found throughout Celtic music."
