Barbara Hanka is a singer, pianist, kantele/Finnish harp player, accordianist, and songwriter. Making her home in Duluth, MN, the inspiration for her piano and vocal songs come from her family, Finnish heritage, lake Superior, and environmental topics, as well as her students at the Lowell Music Magnet School in Duluth.
Barbara has worked as a professional musician both as a soloist and with various groups, performing at folk festivals, FinnFests, cultural institutes, museums, libraries, artist series, etc. Even when working with traditional Finnish tunes, she weaves together Finnish lyrics and English translations.
Hanka is perhaps best known for her mastery of the kantele - in 5, 10 and 36 string versions. Her music integrates folk, ethnic, classical, jazz, blues and new age styles. When not teching, she tours with her husband and two children performing their unique concert, "Remembering Finn hall", which combines her music with the stories and poetry of her awardinning poet/husband Jim Johnson, which attempts to recreate an old Finn Hall evening.
