Big John Shearer announces the completion and production of Vintage Café Society Blues, featuring blues selections
from the golden years of the twentieth century, as well as one new song entitled "Uncharted Ground." John Shearer began learning and performing these
tunes during college summers over thirty years ago. They were tried and true then and continue to amaze him with their power and popularity.
You may recognize the influence of the late great Josh White who, though John never met him, inspired Shearer to learn this sophisticated and subtly intense form of acoustic Blues. Pat Ward, who has played with John for over eight years, brings a wide background of musical experience onto the stage and in the studio. His ability to compliment my guitar style with subtle underpinnings along with explosive percussive licks on the custom built Martin five-string bass makes the end result sound like a larger ensemble than the three principals heard herein. Pat produces our personal appearances and had artist authority for the mix of this CD.
Paul "Lebo" Nash needs no introduction to the Blues scene from coast to coast playing with many of the greats, including Willie Dixon, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Greg Allman, and John Hammond. His musicianship and tasty use of a wide spectrum of harmonica techniques really adds fuel to our fire. Listen to his outrageous offerings on such selections as "Timber" and picture the Spanish moss hanging from the water oaks along the southern Mississippi River at dusk - an ethereal and powerful scene.
John's good friend Cliff "Hitman" Wilson came in from Asheville, where he holds down a computer programming gig, to lay down a track of New Orleans-style congas on Timber.
The analog tracks were recorded hot and virtually without overdubs so what you hear is what you get when Big John appears live. Since John and his group of musicians are of an acoustic nature, he felt that analog recording would best capture the essence and warmth of the music.
